What does the day look like?
Your day starts by checking what the user needs against time and cost limits, then writing, reading, testing and fixing code for new software, changing existing software for new hardware or interfaces, building system testing and validation, meeting analysts, engineers and customers on status and technical issues, and writing documentation and status reports. You use Python, Java, JavaScript and TypeScript, SQL, Git and GitHub or GitLab, Docker, Kubernetes, Jenkins or GitHub Actions, AWS or Azure or Google Cloud, and Jira, plus PyTorch or TensorFlow with pandas and scikit-learn in AI teams, with VS Code and JetBrains IDEs as editors. The modal week is 40 hours in normal office daytime.
The glamorous part is a small share: roughly 3/4 of the time goes to reading old code, fixing bugs, writing tests, updating docs, stand-ups and code reviews, and joining other people's components, while roughly 1/4 is writing new logic, with model training or evaluation only in AI teams. There is no night shift, but on-call rotations, evening releases and crunch weeks before deadlines are normal in product and outsourcing firms.
