What does the day look like?
A Chief Actuary oversees the actuarial governance, balance sheet reserving, capital adequacy, and regulatory compliance of an insurance or reinsurance company. Concrete daily and quarterly tasks include calculating and signing off on Technical Provisions under Solvency II, IFRS 17, or US GAAP, reviewing loss reserving models (chain ladder, Bornhuetter-Ferguson, generalized linear models), and stress testing capital against extreme underwriting events. You draft and present the statutory Actuarial Function Report (AFR) and Own Risk and Solvency Assessment (ORSA) to the Board of Directors and supervisory authorities, and issue formal actuarial opinions on pricing adequacy and outbound reinsurance treaties.
Daily tools include FIS Prophet, Moody's AXIS, WTW ResQ, WTW Igloo, R, Python, SAS, SQL, Microsoft Excel (advanced VBA), and Power BI. Only 15% of the working day is spent on hands-on mathematical modeling or coding. The remaining 85% is devoted to technical governance, reviewing subordinate model runs, cross-departmental alignment with underwriting and investment teams, board presentations, regulatory correspondence, and legal sign-off. The standard working week is 40 to 45 hours, expanding to 55 to 65 hours per week during quarterly closes and annual reporting cycles (January to March). There is no shift work, but emergency availability is required during major catastrophe losses or regulatory inquiries.
