What does the day look like?
As a Senior Actuary, 25% of your working day is spent on pure mathematical modelling, statistical analysis, and writing code. The largest share, 35% of the day, is devoted to model auditing, validation, and regulatory compliance reporting under IFRS 17 and Solvency II frameworks. You work with tools including Prophet (FIS), Mo.Net, RAFM, GGY AXIS, ResQ, Emblem, SAS, Python, R, SQL, and advanced Excel/VBA workbooks, conducting experience studies on mortality, morbidity, policy lapses, and claim severity.
Another 20% of your day involves supervising junior analysts, reviewing code, and tracking team deliverables. The final 20% is spent presenting liability structures and stress-test results to the Chief Risk Officer (CRO), Appointed Actuary, or board committees. Standard office hours run 40 to 45 hours per week. There are no night shifts or on-call duties, but during quarter-end and annual financial closing cycles, hours spike to 55 to 65 hours per week under strict regulatory deadlines.
