What does the day look like?
An Associate in architecture does not spend the whole day drawing. The job is mainly delivery and people management. You may lead 2 or more projects or a sector portfolio, meet clients, coordinate consultants, control fees and programmes with the Partner, review design work, prepare planning and building-control submissions, issue site instructions during construction, mentor Project Architects and Part 1 and Part 2 assistants, and help with bids and interviews for new commissions.
The work is office-based with site visits. Named tools include Autodesk Revit, AutoCAD, Rhino with Grasshopper, SketchUp, Adobe InDesign and Photoshop, BIM 360 / Autodesk Construction Cloud, NBS Chorus or NBS specifications, and Microsoft Project or Deltek PIM. Late finishes happen around bids, planning submissions and site deadlines. There is no rostered shift work and no night work; on-call is limited to construction-stage queries. The glamorous part a teenager imagines, sketching buildings, is only a minority of the day: design review and concept direction. Most of the day is client management, coordination, compliance checking, specifications and team administration.
