What does the day look like?
A partner's day is business ownership, design authority, and final signature. You win work through bids and interviews, set fees, negotiate contracts, sign construction documents, direct project architects and technicians, review drawings and specifications, meet clients and authorities, administer construction contracts, and visit sites to check compliance with plans.
Tools include Autodesk AutoCAD, Autodesk Revit, Bentley MicroStation, Trimble SketchUp Pro, McNeel Rhinoceros 3D with Grasshopper, Graphisoft ArchiCAD, Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Microsoft Project, Oracle Primavera, and BQE ArchiOffice. The glamorous part, sketching and shaping buildings, is roughly 15% to 25% of the week. The rest is fees, staffing, risk, approvals, and client management. O*NET work-context data says 57% of architects work more than 40 hours per week. There is no rostered night shift, but deadlines, competitions, urgent site issues, contract problems, and bids can spill outside normal hours.
