What does the day look like?
This route is not one job title: the UK ARB Prescribed Examination leads toward work as an Architectural Assistant and later Architect. A normal day is usually 09:00 to 17:30 or 18:00, 37.5-40 hours per week. Most work is done in Revit, Archicad, AutoCAD, Rhino 3D, Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, Enscape or V-Ray, making drawings, BIM models, renders and presentations.
The glamorous design-sketching part is only 15%-20% of the day. Around 50%-55% is technical detailing, BIM modelling, specifications, floor plans, sections, elevations, door/window schedules and checking work against Building Regulations Approved Documents Parts B, L and M. Another 25%-30% is coordination with structural and MEP engineers, emails, meetings, reviewing sub-contractor documents and site visits. There is no mandatory night shift or statutory on-call work, but unpaid overtime is common before planning application and tender deadlines. On active sites you wear a hard hat, high-visibility vest and steel-toe boots.
