What does the day look like?
Only 10% to 15% of the role involves destination layovers, uniforms, and calm cruising flight. The remaining 85% to 90% consists of safety compliance, medical crisis management, and heavy physical labor. Duty begins 90 to 120 minutes before departure with a mandatory briefing where failing emergency procedure questions leads to immediate offloading. Crew inspect the Passenger Information List (PIL) on tablets and verify safety hardware including Halon fire extinguishers, PBE smoke hoods, AED defibrillators, Emergency Medical Kits (EMK), crash axes, and CIDS or FAP panels.
In flight, duties include pushing meal carts weighing up to 100 kg along sloped aisles, conducting lavatory checks every 15 to 20 minutes, arming door evacuation slides, restraining unruly passengers, and administering emergency oxygen. Monthly rosters follow legal Flight Duty Periods. Shifts frequently start at 02:00 or 23:00 and last 10 to 16 hours. Rosters also include Home Standby duty requiring arrival at the airport within 90 to 120 minutes of a call, or Airport Standby duty waiting in uniform at the crew lounge.
