What does the day look like?
Between 60% and 75% of your shift is spent outdoors physically loading, unloading, and sorting baggage, cargo, and mail, as well as driving and operating ground support equipment (GSE). You will operate belt loaders, baggage tugs and tractors, pushback tractors, passenger stairs, lavatory and water service trucks, and de-icing sprayers. You also marshal aircraft, position cargo doors and boarding bridges, carry out foreign object debris (FOD) checks, and handle aircraft grooming.
The remaining time splits between waiting and two-way radio coordination with load control, catering, fuelling teams, and the flight deck (15% to 25%), and safety inspections and load sheet paperwork (10% to 15%). Work runs on 24/7 shift rotas including nights, weekends, and public holidays, with split shifts common (such as 05:00 to 23:30 at Swissport Zurich). Narrow-body aircraft turnaround targets typically run 25 to 45 minutes under strict schedule pressure.
