What does the day look like?
You work 40 hours per week, usually 09:00 to 17:30 or 09:00 to 18:00, Monday to Friday. There is no shift work and no night work. On-call happens only during a major geopolitical crisis spike, when senior fellows write emergency commentary for major media outlets.
About 15% of the day is policy writing: short literature summaries, 2-page background memos, and introductory sections of policy papers. Senior fellows write the conclusions, recommendations, and op-eds. About 45% is research support: checking citations, finding treaties, legislative bills, and trade data, keeping references in Zotero, Mendeley, or EndNote, and updating spreadsheets in Microsoft Excel, R, Stata, Python (pandas), and Tableau. About 30% is logistics: organising expert roundtables, booking travel for visiting speakers, running Zoom or hybrid webinars, preparing briefing binders, and writing minutes. About 10% is communications: proofreading summaries, drafting post copy, and updating project pages. Source search runs on LexisNexis, Factiva, HeinOnline, and JSTOR, and team work runs on Microsoft SharePoint, Microsoft Teams, Asana, and Slack.
