What does the day look like?
Work is rotational on remote energy sites such as offshore platforms, LNG plants, desert gas processing facilities, or power stations. Common schedules are 28 days on / 28 days off or 4 weeks on / 4 weeks off. While on site, you work 12-hour shifts 7 days a week (7:00 AM to 7:00 PM or night shift), which can extend up to 16 hours during emergency shutdowns or commissioning phases.
Only about 15% of the time involves high-level engineering decisions, while 85% is routine compliance, safety logging (Permit to Work audits, JSA), shift handovers, and chasing spare parts in ERP systems. Daily tasks include monitoring live SCADA and DCS systems for pressure drops and turbine vibrations, using tools like Aspen HYSYS, PIPESIM, HART communicators, and FLIR thermal cameras under extreme desert or marine conditions.
