What does the day look like?
As a QC analyst, 35% of your working day is spent at the laboratory bench: preparing samples and testing raw active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), excipients, in-process blends, and finished drug batches for identity, purity, and dissolution. You operate instruments such as High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), Ultra-High Performance Liquid Chromatography (UHPLC), Gas Chromatography (GC / GC-MS), Karl Fischer titration, UV-Vis spectrophotometers, and Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR).
Documentation takes up 45% of your day: checking chromatography integration in Waters Empower 3 or Agilent OpenLab CDS, entering records into LabWare LIMS or STARLIMS, and verifying audit trails under strict 21 CFR Part 11 and Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) standards. The remaining 20% goes into instrument calibrations, Out-of-Specification (OOS) investigations, preparing reagents, and disposing of mobile phases. Because pharmaceutical plants run 24/7, analysts work rotating 2-shift or 3-shift rosters, including night shifts and weekend coverage.
