What does the day look like?
You ingest RAW files (CR3, ARW, NEF, IIQ): you fix white balance, clear chromatic aberration, set base tonal curves and match the target ICC profile. Then skin and texture work — frequency separation, Dodge and Burn on 16-bit curves or 50% gray layers, flyaway hair cleanup, fabric smoothing, pen-tool clipping paths, hair alpha masking, background replacement, shadows (drop, cast, contact), and export with EXIF/IPTC handling (sRGB, WebP, JPEG, PSD/TIFF). You work in Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom Classic, Capture One Pro and Helicon Focus, on a Wacom Intuos Pro or Cintiq with a calibrated EIZO ColorEdge or BenQ PhotoVue monitor.
Only 15% of the day is creative grading — 55% is repetitive precision work like dust removal, strand-by-strand hair cleanup and stroke-by-stroke Dodge and Burn, and 30% is file organisation, Capture One export queues, multi-gigabyte downloads, revision rounds with art directors and client messages. Freelancers often work overnight for European and United States deadlines, in-house teams work 8-hour shifts, 40 hours per week, with weekend shifts during Black Friday and seasonal catalogue launches.
