What does the day look like?
Your day is stone flow through the laboratory, capacity planning, operating and capital expenses, alignment to global grading standards, approval of staff time, morning security opening and evening closing, management reporting with corrective-action analysis, and hosting trade visitors. At Gubelin the same role adds client service, finance, human resources, and event planning.
Bench work remains: inspection under gemmological microscope, refractometer, polariscope, spectroscope and 10x loupe, plus ED-XRF, FTIR spectroscopy, UV-Vis spectroscopy, micro-Raman spectroscopy, LA-ICP-TOF mass spectrometry and micro X-ray computerised tomography for pearls, photography of internal features, coloured-stone identification, treatment detection and origin determination, instrument maintenance, testing under strict protocols, and travel to trade fairs and overseas training. In every primary description most of the week is rostering, throughput, quality assurance, report sign-off, client escalations and staff development, with personal bench testing as the small share. No night-shift or on-call pattern was evidenced.
