What does the day look like?
You work behind an armored counter inside a shop. The week is 40 to 48 hours, usually on a 5/2, 4/2 or 2/2 shift pattern, with weekend cover and evening shifts. 24/7 shops in dense cities also run night shifts.
About 30% of the day is technical testing: reading hallmarks such as 585, 750 and 925, checking gold purity on a touchstone with nitric acid solutions (10k, 14k, 18k, 22k), weighing on a certified digital scale, testing stones with an electronic tester such as the Presidium Multi Tester III, and inspecting under a 10x loupe. The other 70% is customers and paperwork: negotiating the loan, checking passports and ID cards, screening names against AML databases, handling cash, issuing the pawn ticket, resolving disputes, and sealing pledged items in tamper-evident bags for the vault. You size the loan against the daily gold spot price and a company ratio, typically 60% to 80% of secondary melt value. Tools: touchstone, acid test set, precision balance, loupe, magnetic wand, ultrasonic cleaner, XRF analyzer in modern shops. Software: 1C:Lombard in Uzbekistan and the CIS, PawnMaster or Bravo Pawn Systems in the US and UK.
