What does the day look like?
The day starts with unlocking trays from the store safes and dressing the vitrines under directed lighting, 40 to 60 minutes. Then 30% to 50% of the shift is customer consultation: you ask about budget and occasion, present pieces on a velvet pad, and explain hallmarks (585/14K, 750/18K, 950 Pt), the 4Cs of diamonds, and natural versus lab-grown origin. About 15% to 25% of the shift is till and paperwork: the POS terminal, AML identification on large cash payments, attaching GIA, IGI or HRD Antwerp cards to the guarantee passport, and gift wrapping.
The day ends with a piece-by-piece stock count and locking every high-value item back in the safe, 45 to 60 minutes. Tools are a 10x triplet loupe, Presidium diamond tester, digital carat balance, ultrasonic bath, ring mandrel, and Lightspeed Retail, Cegid Retail, SAP Customer Checkout, Shopify POS or Oracle Retail Xstore. Only 15% to 20% of the day is the glamorous part with diamonds and luxury buyers; 80% to 85% is glass polishing, standing 7 to 9 hours, returns, repair complaints and monthly quotas. Hours follow the mall, typically 10:00 to 22:00, with rostered Saturday and Sunday shifts, 38 to 40 hours over 5 days. December, Valentine's Day and wedding season mean mandatory overtime, and there are no night shifts in standard jewelry retail.
