What does the day look like?
Your work divides into portfolio, governance and field blocks. On portfolio you allocate capital across projects, run stage-gate reviews from generative work through drill testing to resource definition, approve drilling budgets, decide joint-venture and earn-in deals, and review country risk on permits, land access, security and fiscal terms. On governance you write board and investor reports, prepare technical-committee papers, and control disclosure of drill results under NI 43-101 or JORC Code 2012. On field you visit active drill programmes, sit in core-review sessions, run safety reviews, and meet government and community counterparts. Tools: Leapfrog Geo, Micromine, Surpac, Datamine, ArcGIS, QGIS, Oasis montaj, acQuire and ioGAS.
The boots-on-outcrop discovery work teenagers picture takes a small share of the year. Most of the year is offices, meeting rooms and short site visits. It is not shift work, but safety incidents, drill-result releases and permit crises create on-call pressure, with long-haul travel and nights during board cycles. Site visits mean mine-site rosters, early starts, personal protective equipment and remote locations.
