What does the day look like?
The role splits between field acquisition and office processing, modelling, and reporting. According to Alberta ALIS, you decide survey areas, choose methods, estimate costs, supervise field crews, and process recorded data with software to interpret subsurface structures. O*NET 19-2042.00 lists core tasks as planning field studies and analysing geological data with computer tools. Instruments include proton-precession and cesium magnetometers, CG-series gravimeters, IP transmitters and receivers, resistivity meters for ERT and VES, DGPS base stations, ground-penetrating radar, and software like Geosoft Oasis montaj, RES2DINV, Surfer, ArcGIS, MATLAB, Python, Leapfrog, and Surpac.
Walking the ground with instruments to spot anomalies takes up a minority share of time outside peak field campaigns. The larger share goes to data processing, inversion, quality control, map production, and technical reporting. Mineral exploration involves camp-based rosters, remote deployments, standby for weather or equipment windows, and occasional night work on seismic or monitoring spreads.
