What does the day look like?
Your day is in an office, at a computer. For O*NET 15-1299.02 you check databases for currency and accuracy, build data layers, maps, tables and reports, maintain GIS databases, enter data by coordinate geometry and digitising, read aerial and ortho imagery, run geospatial models, and support clients. Your tools are Esri ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online and ArcGIS Enterprise, QGIS, PostGIS and PostgreSQL, Safe Software FME, ERDAS IMAGINE, ENVI, Autodesk AutoCAD and Map 3D, Bentley MicroStation, SQL Server and Oracle, plus Python with ArcPy, GeoPandas and GDAL, and R for spatial statistics.
The maps and 3-dimensional models are the smaller share of the hours. The larger share is cleaning geometries, fixing projections, joining drill-hole and assay tables, documenting lineage, and re-running failed geoprocessing jobs. O*NET work context for 2026 reports 89% indoors in controlled conditions every day, 78% sitting continually or almost continually, and 69% rating exactness as extremely important. Consulting and major-miner teams work office hours with deadline peaks before resource updates and permit submissions. Pure GIS posts have no rostered night shifts. Camp rotations and on-call support for production databases exist only where the post sits on an operating mine.
