What does the day look like?
Only a small part of the day is hands-on installation. Most of it is inspecting sites, planning schedules, estimating and tracking costs, supervising tradespeople, ordering materials, negotiating contracts with clients and subcontractors, applying for permits, submitting tenders, handling payroll and tax records, and chasing late payments. Common software includes Procore, Autodesk AutoCAD, Autodesk Revit, Oracle Primavera, Microsoft Project, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft Outlook. Site equipment may include laser measures, thermal cameras, multimeters, and pressure testers.
In O*NET's work-context survey, 74% reported working more than 40 hours per week. Email and telephone contact happen daily. Deadlines can bring evening and weekend work, while heating, plumbing, and electrical faults may lead to night callouts.
