What does the day look like?
As a civil-law notary you work as an independent public officer who drafts and authenticates deeds: property sales, wills, inheritance partitions, company formations, powers of attorney, and marriage contracts. You verify identity, explain legal effect, check land and commercial registers, apply anti-money-laundering rules, and maintain archives. In Germany the main tools include the Bundesnotarkammer XNP platform, XNotar modules, the GwG-Prüfungstool, qualified e-signature, and the electronic notary mailbox beN.
Roughly 40–50% of the day is client-facing drafting and signing ceremonies, 30–40% document preparation, register checks and compliance, and 15–25% admin and correspondence. This is not shift work — standard office hours, though appointments can run into the evening. Some offices have on-call duty only for urgent authentications; it is not a 24/7 emergency role.
