What does the day look like?
Partner is not a separate licence — it is a senior rank inside a firm for someone who is already a qualified lawyer. Roughly 20–35% of the day is high-stakes legal work: matter strategy, key documents, and court deadlines. About 30–45% goes to winning and keeping clients, negotiations, and internal politics. Another 25–40% is management, billing, compliance, HR, and finance; equity partners also carry profit-and-loss responsibility for their practice.
Your week runs through time-and-billing platforms such as Elite 3E or Aderant, document systems like iManage or NetDocuments, and Microsoft 365; disputes work may also use Relativity. There is no shift rota, but large firms often expect 50–70+ hours a week, with evening calls across time zones and hard court deadlines. You are not on a formal on-call schedule, but major clients and crises can pull you in at any hour.
