What does the day look like?
You work a standard 40-hour week building, testing, and maintaining automated data pipelines (ETL/ELT) that turn raw information into clean, usable data. Daily technical work involves writing code and transformation logic in Python, SQL, and Scala, alongside tools like Apache Spark, Apache Kafka, Snowflake, Google BigQuery, PostgreSQL, dbt, and Apache Airflow.
While beginners often expect to spend 80 percent of their time designing high-level artificial intelligence systems, workplace reality is different: about 25 percent of the day is spent writing core pipeline code and SQL models, 35 percent debugging broken data jobs and handling corrupted source data, 20 percent managing cloud infrastructure and compute costs, and 20 percent in coordination meetings with analysts and developers. Engineers also participate in rotating on-call shifts to fix overnight batch failures before morning business hours.
Will AI replace this job?
ILO/NASK 2025 exposure index: 0.57 for ISCO-08 2521 Database Designers and Administrators, and 0.53 for ISCO-08 2512 Software Developers; both are in Gradient 3, high exposure. This is a task-exposure number for generative AI, not a forecast that the job disappears. The exposed part is the routine coding side: first-draft SQL transformations, boilerplate pipeline code, regex data-cleaning scripts, dbt models, and standard infrastructure-as-code templates. In the dossier, that is roughly 25 percent of the day.
The rest of the role sits on the low-exposure side of the published indices: diagnosing unclear pipeline failures, handling unexpected schema drift and API contract breaks across distributed systems, physical database clustering, tuning cost and performance, and negotiating requirements between engineering, product, and analytics teams. OECD 2023 places ISCO 251 and 252 occupations at low overall risk of full automation, in the bottom tercile of occupational displacement risk. WEF 2023 lists Big Data Specialists and Data Engineers among the fastest-growing roles globally, with 30 to 35 percent net employment growth projected.
What do you need to start?
Data engineering is an unregulated profession. No government licence, mandatory registration, or specific degree is legally required to work or freelance, and domestic employers prioritize demonstrated technical ability in Python and SQL alongside working pipeline projects on GitHub.
However, international work visa sponsorship (such as the German EU Blue Card or US H-1B) legally requires a verified Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related quantitative field in over 90 percent of cases. Industry vendor certifications from AWS, Google Cloud, Databricks, or Snowflake validate practical skills during interviews, but they do not legally substitute for a university degree under immigration rules.
Where do you study, and for how long?
In Uzbekistan, preparation begins with undergraduate degrees in computer science or software engineering. Inha University in Tashkent offers a 4-year Computer Science and Software Engineering programme for UZS 32,000,000 per academic year (2024/2025). Westminster International University in Tashkent (WIUT) teaches a 4-year BSc in Computer Science / BIS for UZS 32,200,000 annually. Tashkent University of Information Technologies (TUIT) offers 4-year software engineering degrees at a base state tuition of UZS 7,400,000 without stipend (UZS 9,129,930 with stipend). Turin Polytechnic University in Tashkent costs UZS 28,500,000 annually for 4 years, and New Uzbekistan University charges UZS 49,700,000 per year for its 4-year BSc in Computer Science.
Abroad, Warsaw University of Technology in Poland offers an English-taught 3.5 to 4-year B.Sc. in Computer Science at EUR 4,500 per academic year for non-EU students. In Germany, the Technical University of Munich (TUM) offers a 3-year German-taught B.Sc. Informatik and a 2-year English-taught M.Sc. in Data Engineering and Analytics; international tuition at TUM is EUR 4,000 to EUR 6,000 per semester (EUR 8,000 to EUR 12,000 annually), while most other German public universities charge EUR 0 tuition with a semester fee of EUR 200 to EUR 350. Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) in the Netherlands teaches a 3-year English-medium BSc in Computer Science and Engineering for EUR 16,704 per year. UNIST in South Korea offers an English-taught 4-year bachelor's degree at KRW 3,100,000 per semester (around USD 2,300). Purdue University in the United States offers a 4-year B.S. in Computer Science / Data Science for USD 31,104 per year.
Foreign degree recognition for work visas costs EUR 208 through ZAB in Germany, GBP 54.00 through UK ENIC in the UK, and USD 170 to USD 240 through NACES evaluators like WES in the United States.
Where can you actually work?
The role is established in Uzbekistan. Domestic hiring is driven by fintech and e-commerce companies (Uzum, Click, Payme), commercial banks (TBC Bank Uzbekistan, Kapitalbank, Ipak Yo'li Bank, Agrobank), telecommunications providers (Beeline Uzbekistan, Ucell), and international outsourcing centers (EPAM Systems Uzbekistan, Exadel Uzbekistan). Employees at IT Park resident companies pay a reduced 7.5 percent personal income tax rate.
Remote work for international companies is entirely feasible, though foreign employers rarely offer direct foreign employment contracts due to corporate tax rules. Instead, they hire engineers via B2B contracts or Employer of Record platforms like Deel and Remote.com. Under Presidential Resolution No. PP-4742, remote workers can register as self-employed to receive foreign freelance software revenue tax-free (0 percent). Relocation is most realistic through European skilled immigration routes such as the German EU Blue Card.
Where are the jobs posted?
Global remote jobs open to applicants based in Uzbekistan are listed on We Work Remotely (weworkremotely.com), RemoteOK (remoteok.com), Wellfound (wellfound.com), and LinkedIn Jobs using the remote filter.
Domestic and regional roles within Uzbekistan are posted on HeadHunter Uzbekistan (hh.uz), the IT Park job market (it-market.uz), and EPAM Systems Uzbekistan Careers (careers.epam.uz). Destination-specific boards include StepStone (stepstone.de) and Bundesagentur für Arbeit Jobbörse (arbeitsagentur.de/jobsuche) for Germany, Just Join IT (justjoin.it) and No Fluff Jobs (nofluffjobs.com) for Poland, and CWJobs (cwjobs.co.uk) and Reed.co.uk (reed.co.uk) for the UK. These destination boards generally require pre-existing work rights or an employer willing to sponsor an international work visa.
How much English, honestly?
University admissions for English-taught degrees typically require an IELTS Academic score of 6.0 to 6.5 (TU Delft and Purdue University require 6.5 with sub-scores not below 6.0) or a TOEFL iBT score of 80 to 92 (Purdue requires minimum 88). Non-English tracks require other exams entirely: German-taught undergraduate degrees require TestDaF Level 4 in all sections (or C1), and Korean tracks require TOPIK Level 3 or 4.
On the job, international and remote teams require CEFR B2 to C1 technical English. You do not need sales-level fluency, but you must read technical specifications, write code pull requests, document database schemas in Jira or GitHub, and communicate clearly in daily standup meetings. Local firms in non-English markets require the regional language instead, such as German B2/C1 or Japanese JLPT N2/N1.
