What does the day look like?
A Director of Product typically works 45 to 55 hours per week. Brainstorming new features and sketching user experience ideas accounts for only 10% of the working day. The remaining time is spent on people management and hiring (40%), executive alignment, budget allocation, and stakeholder negotiations (30%), and monitoring metrics, unit economics, and market research (20%).
Daily work relies on tools such as Jira, Linear, Productboard, Amplitude, Mixpanel, Looker, Tableau, Figma, Miro, and Slack. There are no manual shifts, but managing cross-functional teams across multiple time zones (such as the US West Coast, Europe, and Central Asia) requires frequent early-morning or late-night calls. You are also directly accountable during major product launches, service outages, or security escalations.
Will AI replace this job?
ILO/NASK 2025 exposure index: 0.44 for ISCO-08 1330 Information and Communications Technology Services Managers, Gradient 2; under the alternative listing, 0.42 for ISCO-08 1219 Business Services and Administration Managers Not Elsewhere Classified, also Gradient 2. This is a 0-to-1 task-exposure scale, so it measures which parts of the work can be affected by AI; it is not a prediction that the whole job disappears. OECD 2018 places managerial occupations in ISCO-08 Major Group 1 in the lowest risk tier: under 10% probability of outright automation, because complex communication, high-stakes negotiation, and unstructured problem-solving are bottlenecks for automation.
The exposed part is mainly the 20% to 30% of the day spent on monitoring metrics, reviewing cohort retention, doing user and market research, and synthesising portfolio ROI. The dossier says AI can help draft PRDs, cluster user research transcripts, generate Jira/Linear user stories, query SQL databases through natural language, and draft first versions of board update slides. The less exposed 70% is people management, hiring interviews, alignment across engineering and legal, unblocking teams, and budget negotiations. Published indices therefore point to augmentation and task compression, not head-count replacement: routine administrative synthesis moves into software, while strategic negotiation and personnel coordination become a larger share of the role.
What do you need to start?
Product management is an unregulated profession globally, meaning no statutory licence or government certification is legally required. In practice, major tech firms and international visa systems require a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Economics, or Business Administration. Around 30% to 40% of Directors also hold an MBA or a Master's degree.
Professional certifications such as Pragmatic Institute Certification (PMC), Certified Scrum Product Owner (CSPO), or AIPMM exist, but they do not substitute for a formal degree or years of proven product leadership experience. They serve only as continuing education.
Where do you study, and for how long?
There is no specific undergraduate degree titled 'Product Management'. Reaching this level requires a 4-year degree in STEM or business followed by 8+ years of progressive industry experience. In Uzbekistan, Westminster International University in Tashkent (WIUT) offers a 4-year BSc (Hons) in Business Information Systems with an annual tuition of UZS 33,260,000 for 2024/2025. INHA University in Tashkent (IUT) charges UZS 32,500,000 per year for Computer Science and Software Engineering, Turin Polytechnic University in Tashkent (TTPU) charges UZS 28,500,000, and Tashkent University of Information Technologies (TUIT) base tuition ranges from UZS 7,400,000 to UZS 9,100,000.
Internationally, Carnegie Mellon University in the United States offers a specialized 1-year Master of Science in Product Management (MSPM) costing USD 73,000 per year. In the United Kingdom, University College London (UCL) offers the 3-year BSc Information Management for Business at GBP 37,500 per year for international students. In Germany, the Technical University of Munich (TUM) offers 3-year programmes in Informatics and Management and Data Science, with non-EU annual tuition ranging from EUR 4,000 to EUR 6,000. In Ireland, Trinity College Dublin offers a 4-year BA Computer Science and Business for EUR 27,880 annually. In South Korea, KAIST offers a 4-year undergraduate programme in Computer Science and Technology Management with annual tuition of KRW 6,866,000, which is frequently covered by scholarships.
Foreign diploma recognition requires a ZAB assessment in Germany (EUR 208 for Blue Card processing), a UK ENIC Statement of Comparability in the UK (GBP 49.50 + VAT), or a NACES-member evaluation such as WES in the US (USD 170 to USD 230). Uzbek diplomas must be apostilled via Public Service Centres or my.gov.uz before visa filing.
Where can you actually work?
In Uzbekistan, Director of Product roles exist primarily within major tech and fintech ecosystems such as Uzum (Uzum Market, Uzum Bank, Uzum Nasiya), TBC Bank Uzbekistan, Payme, Click, Ucell, Beeline (Unitel), and IT Park outsourcing firms. In smaller local businesses, these responsibilities are typically handled directly by founders, CTOs, or project managers. Local net compensation in Tashkent ranges from UZS 25,000,000 to UZS 50,000,000+ per month.
Direct remote leadership roles for US or EU tech companies while residing in Uzbekistan are rare due to time zone differences (UTC+5 vs. US time zones) and the need for in-person executive presence. Where remote work occurs, it is managed via B2B contracts (as an individual entrepreneur / YaTT) or Employer of Record platforms such as Deel or Remote.com. Moving abroad is realistic to tech hubs in the US, UK, and Germany via skilled worker visa routes (H-1B, UK Skilled Worker, EU Blue Card) with employer sponsorship.
Where are the jobs posted?
Vacancies open to international applicants seeking visa sponsorship are posted on LinkedIn Jobs (linkedin.com/jobs), Levels.fyi Jobs (levels.fyi/jobs), Wellfound (wellfound.com), and Otta (otta.com).
Country-specific job boards that generally require an existing local right to work include StepStone (stepstone.de) in Germany, Reed (reed.co.uk) and Workable in the United Kingdom, and Daijob (daijob.com) and Wantedly (wantedly.com) in Japan. In Uzbekistan, vacancies are found on HeadHunter Uzbekistan (hh.uz), Devs.uz (devs.uz), and corporate careers portals for companies like Uzum and TBC Bank.
How much English, honestly?
For university admissions, US programmes typically require TOEFL iBT 100+ or IELTS 7.5, UK institutions like UCL require IELTS 7.0 (with no band below 6.5), German English-taught tracks ask for IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL 88, and KAIST in South Korea requires IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL iBT 83. German-taught degrees require TestDaF (4x4) or Goethe-Zertifikat C1.
On the job, language requirements are higher than test cutoffs. A Director of Product must operate at a professional C1 to C2 English level to author product strategy documents, deliver board presentations, and lead multicultural engineering teams. Outside English-speaking hubs, local mid-market German firms require B2/C1 German, Japanese companies require JLPT N1, and Korean platforms like Coupang or Naver require TOPIK Level 5 or 6.
