What does the day look like?
A typical workweek consists of standard 40-hour desk-based or remote work with no shift work or on-call duties. Daily work revolves around tools like Figma, FigJam, Miro, ProtoPie, Maze, UserTesting, Hotjar, Notion, Jira, Linear, and Slack. Typical tasks include building user flows, wireframing, crafting interactive prototypes, maintaining design systems, conducting usability tests, and preparing specifications for software engineers.
Designing visual screens takes only about 25% to 35% of working hours. The remaining 65% to 75% of your day is spent in stakeholder meetings, conducting user interviews, auditing drop-off points, and negotiating technical implementation details with developers.
Will AI replace this job?
ILO 2025 exposure index: ISCO-08 2166 Graphic and Multimedia Designers scores 0.49, Gradient 2 (Augmentation); ISCO-08 2513 Web and Multimedia Developers scores 0.58, also in the augmentation tier. The ILO number measures task exposure, not whether the whole job disappears: it shows where large language and multimodal models can match human benchmarks on work tasks.
The exposed part is mainly the visual 25%–35% of the day: generating vector components, assembling first wireframe layouts, translating designs into code scaffolds for developer handoff, syncing style tokens, and creating synthetic test data. The lower-exposure part is the 65%–75% core of the role: qualitative user interviews, contextual discovery sessions, negotiation with stakeholders, finding the root cause of usability problems, and aligning strategic trade-offs. Under the OECD 2023 method, Graphic and Multimedia Designers have an automation risk score of approximately 0.28 to 0.35, below the 0.70 high-risk threshold for role elimination. In the WEF 2023 employer survey, digital interface design and software engineering roles are projected to see net employment growth, while 38% of core design and coding skills are flagged for technology-driven disruption.
What do you need to start?
UI/UX design is an unregulated profession globally, meaning no license or specific degree is legally required to practice or invoice clients. Employers evaluate candidates almost entirely on a verified case study portfolio that demonstrates problem solving, wireframing, and interactive prototyping.
Credentials such as the Google UX Design Professional Certificate or Nielsen Norman Group UX Master Certified credential help validate foundational knowledge, but no certificate substitutes for a formal degree under immigration law. If you plan to relocate internationally via visa schemes like the German EU Blue Card or US H-1B, immigration authorities require an accredited bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Human-Computer Interaction, Design, or a related field.
Where do you study, and for how long?
Uzbekistan does not have a standalone state degree titled 'UI/UX Design' in the national registry. Inha University in Tashkent (IUT) covers UI/UX and Human-Computer Interaction within its 4-year Computer Science and Software Engineering degree at an annual tuition of UZS 40,400,000. Webster University in Tashkent offers 4-year degrees in Computer Science or Media Studies at USD 3,680 per year. Specialized practical training inside Uzbekistan is mostly delivered by private tech hubs such as IT Academy, Astrum IT Academy, and PDP Academy.
Abroad, focused degree programmes exist across several destinations. In the United Kingdom, University of the Arts London offers a 3-year English-taught BA (Hons) User Experience Design at GBP 28,570 per year. In the United States, the University of Washington offers a 4-year Bachelor of Science in Human Centered Design & Engineering (HCDE) for USD 41,997 per year in non-resident tuition. In the Netherlands, The Hague University of Applied Sciences teaches a 4-year English-medium BSc in User Experience Design for EUR 9,940 per year. In Germany, Technische Hochschule Ingolstadt offers a 3.5-year (7-semester) BSc in User Experience Design with EUR 0 state tuition and a semester contribution of approximately EUR 82.
Work visa validation for an Uzbek degree requires a Statement of Comparability through ZAB in Germany (EUR 208 fee), UK ENIC in the UK (GBP 54.00), or a NACES evaluation (WES/ECE) in the US (USD 150 to USD 300).
Where can you actually work?
In Uzbekistan, domestic fintech platforms, digital banks, and delivery apps such as Uzum, Payme, Click, TBC Bank Uzbekistan, and Uzum Market employ dedicated design teams. Mid-level designers in Tashkent earn between UZS 10,000,000 and UZS 25,000,000 gross monthly.
Remote work for international clients is highly feasible from Uzbekistan. Foreign companies hire Uzbek designers under B2B contractor agreements (such as self-employed or individual entrepreneur status) rather than standard direct foreign payroll, with earnings paid via SWIFT bank transfers or Payoneer. Moving abroad requires company visa sponsorship and a recognized university degree, as no bilateral government quotas exist for UI/UX designers.
Where are the jobs posted?
For jobs inside Uzbekistan, vacancies are listed on HeadHunter Uzbekistan (hh.uz) and local Telegram channels such as @tashkent_jobs and @uxuzbekistan.
To find international work directly from Uzbekistan, freelance marketplaces like Upwork and Fiverr are accessible. Global startup and tech roles are posted on Wellfound and Dribbble Jobs. International in-house and relocation roles are advertised on LinkedIn Jobs, while curated European tech roles appear on Otta (Welcome to the Jungle), many of which require an existing local right to work.
How much English, honestly?
For university admission, UK institutions like UAL require IELTS Academic 6.0 (minimum 5.5 in all sub-bands), The Hague UAS in the Netherlands requires IELTS 6.0 or TOEFL iBT 80, and the University of Washington requires TOEFL iBT 76 (recommended 92+) or IELTS 6.5. In Germany, German-taught programmes demand TestDaF level 4 (CEFR B2/C1), while English-taught components require IELTS 6.0 or TOEFL iBT 80.
On the job, freelance and asynchronous remote work requires at least CEFR B2 English to present designs and write interface copy. Corporate product teams require professional C1 fluency to conduct qualitative user interviews, synthesize research, and defend product trade-offs with cross-functional managers and developers.
