What does the day look like?
Actual writing and stylistic polishing take up only 15% to 25% of your working day. The remaining 75% to 85% involves evaluating contributor submissions against house style guides and legal standards, fact-checking claims against primary records and public registries, rewriting headlines and metadata for SEO, and coordinating with photo editors, layout designers, and legal counsel to assemble the final publication queue.
You will work daily in CMS platforms such as WordPress VIP, Drupal, or Ghost, alongside Google Docs, Microsoft Word, Adobe InDesign, and Adobe InCopy. The schedule varies by outlet: digital news desks operate on fast-paced rotations with early morning shifts starting at 06:00, late evening shifts until 23:00, and weekend on-call duties. In contrast, book and magazine publishers stick to standard 37.5 to 40 hours per week, though mandatory overtime is required during print closing cycles.
