What does the day look like?
Your workday begins with collecting and verifying employee timesheets, attendance logs, and overtime hours before entering them into the system. You calculate gross earnings, deduct mandatory taxes and pension levies, and determine the final net pay. You also calculate sick pay, annual leave, and maternity disbursements, generate payslips, and process batch bank transfers using platforms like BACS, SEPA, or ACH.
Around 90% of your time is spent working systematically in Microsoft Excel (using formulas like VLOOKUP, XLOOKUP, INDEX/MATCH, and SUMIFS) and entering payroll data into software such as 1C:ZUP, ADP, Workday, SAP, or Sage. The remaining 10% involves answering employee questions regarding tax codes or pay discrepancies. This is a standard desk job of 38 to 40 hours per week without night shifts, though you will face heavy workloads 2 to 4 days before payroll cutoff deadlines.
