What does the day look like?
A Security Operations Center runs 24/7/365. A Tier 1 SOC Analyst works 12-hour shifts (such as 07:00 to 19:00 day shifts alternating with 19:00 to 07:00 night shifts, often in a "4 days on, 4 days off" pattern) or rotating 8-hour shifts. Mandatory night, weekend, and holiday shifts are standard conditions for entry-level roles.
About 75% of the day is spent reviewing incoming alert queues in SIEM tools (Splunk, Microsoft Sentinel, IBM QRadar, Elastic Security) and EDR platforms (CrowdStrike Falcon, SentinelOne), checking benign false positives against VirusTotal or AbuseIPDB, and updating tickets in ServiceNow or Jira. Another 20% covers shift handovers, playbook reviews, and alert tuning. Only 5% of the day involves the dramatic, active investigation of a live intrusion or ransomware outbreak before escalating it to Tier 2.
