What does the day look like?
The day starts with building and editing maps, graphs and diagrams in ESRI ArcGIS, Caliper Maptitude, Leica Geosystems ERDAS IMAGINE and Autodesk AutoCAD, working with coordinate systems, longitude, latitude, elevation, topography and map scales. You gather geographic data from censuses, field observations, satellite imagery, aerial photographs and existing maps, record physical characteristics such as geological formations, climates and vegetation with surveying or meteorological equipment, locate existing geographic information databases, run and maintain geographic information computer systems, analyse geographic distributions from local to global scale, write and present reports, give GIS support to public and private users, go out on outdoor field work at times, and teach geography. Other named tools: Python, R, SQL, IBM SPSS Statistics, SAS, The MathWorks MATLAB, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Outlook.
Hours are standard full time business hours, mainly indoors in a controlled setting, sitting for more than 50% of the time, with daily email use and teamwork rated very important. Field assignments add travel to remote locations and foreign countries. No regular shift, on-call or night pattern is documented at entry level. The imagined part, mapping and climate analysis, is roughly 50% of the day; data cleaning, database searches, report writing and user support is the other roughly 50%.
