What does the day look like?
You clean and validate incoming spatial and tabular data, build and maintain GIS databases, and produce map layers, tables and reports through spatial analysis. You digitise aerial and satellite imagery, overlay hazard layers such as flood extents and drought indices with population and infrastructure layers, document methods and metadata, agree specifications with clients and fix errors.
Your named tools are Esri ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online, QGIS, ERDAS Imagine, PostGIS and PostgreSQL, SQL databases, Python with geopandas and rasterio, R for spatial statistics, AutoCAD and MicroStation for CAD exchange, and Google Earth Engine for large raster work. GNSS receivers, drones and laser scanners appear only in field-flavoured roles. O*NET reports 89% work indoors in environmentally controlled conditions every day and 78% sit continually or almost continually. Drought and flood risk maps are about 1/3 of the day; data cleaning, database maintenance, documentation and client revisions are about 2/3. Hours are standard daytime office hours. There is no routine shift or night work except deadline-driven consultancy delivery and emergency flood mapping deployments.
