What does the day look like?
Your work looks like a Met Office Foundation Scientist post. You engage with users on UK Climate Projections, deliver usable climate information products, do the scientific analysis behind them, document customer requirements, co-produce climate services for hazards and sectors, train users through training and workshops, and contribute to reports and presentations. The Data Science track adds data preparation, scientific coding, evaluation, and machine learning for the FastNet Machine Learning Weather Prediction model. The Observations track adds sensor data, quality control, statistical and visualisation analysis, and written and verbal briefings.
The named tools are Python, R, C++ and Fortran, JEDI, Unified Model output, radar and satellite imagery systems, High Performance Computing schedulers, and standard analysis and visualisation libraries. About 65% of the entry day is code, data cleaning, validation, documentation, and user support, 25% is analysis and writing, and 10% is meetings, training, and travel. International posts include travel blocks of 1 week to 2 weeks at a time. Operational forecasting posts add shifts, nights, weekends, and on-call for severe weather. Research posts are normally daytime office hours with hybrid work at Exeter HQ and deadline pressure around releases and assessments.
