What does the day look like?
Around 35% of the day is spent turning engineering sketches into production-ready 3D parametric CAD models of brackets, thermal shield mounts, sensor fixtures, and structural ribs. Another 35% goes into preparing 2D manufacturing drawings to ASME Y14.5 or ISO 1101 standards, adding surface finish callouts, thread pitches, and geometric tolerances. The remaining time covers PDM and PLM administrative work such as Engineering Change Orders (ECO/ECN) and Bill of Materials (BOM) updates (15%), picking standard fasteners and connectors from aerospace catalogues (10%), and resolving drawing ambiguities with CNC shops or cleanroom assembly teams (5%).
Roughly 85% of the job is routine detailing rather than designing deep-space probes: formatting drawing title blocks, drafting secondary brackets, and updating part numbers. The role follows a standard 40-hour office week (8:00 to 17:00 or 9:00 to 18:00) with no night shifts. Weekend or on-call work occurs only before critical project milestones or design reviews (CDR). Standard software includes CATIA V5/3DEXPERIENCE, Siemens NX, SolidWorks, PTC Creo, Windchill, and Enovia.
