What does the day look like?
A standard work week runs 40 to 50 hours. 65% of your day is office-based engineering: numerical modeling, thermo-fluid simulation in Ansys Fluent or Simcenter STAR-CCM+, scripting in MATLAB and Python, CAD drafting in Siemens NX or CATIA, and safety documentation. Another 25% is spent inspecting hardware, checking high-pressure cryo-valves, and calibrating sensors.
Only 10% of the job involves active hot-fire engine testing or live launch countdowns. During static fire campaigns or launch windows, expect 12-hour shifts, night work, and weekend on-call duties. Due to toxic and cryogenic propellants under extreme pressure, live firing is monitored from remote bunkers.
