What does the day look like?
The day begins with a pre-trip inspection of tyre condition, pneumatic brake pressure, fluid levels, and coupling mechanisms before turning the ignition. Driving on the open road accounts for 50% to 60% of shift time, while waiting, loading, and offloading at logistics terminals and customs clearance queues take up 20% to 25%. Daily walkaround checks, fueling, coupling, and paperwork take the remaining time.
Drivers navigate using commercial satellite units like Garmin dēzl, record driving hours on digital tachographs such as VDO DTCO or Stoneridge SE5000 using a personal driver smart card, and sign consignment notes like CMR, T1, or ADR declarations. Under EU Regulation EC 560/2006, daily driving is limited to 9 hours (extendable to 10 hours twice a week) with mandatory 11 hours of unbroken daily rest. Night driving is common to avoid traffic, and long-haul drivers frequently sleep in the cab sleeper berth.
