What does the day look like?
A typical day centers on loading 24 to 120 stems into a DAW such as Avid Pro Tools Ultimate, Steinberg Nuendo/Cubase, Apple Logic Pro, Cockos REAPER, or Ableton Live. Mixing involves checking phase alignment, frequency slotting with EQs, applying compression (FabFilter, Soundtoys, Waves Audio), spatial processing, and parameter automation. Mastering takes place in acoustically calibrated rooms, using tools like iZotope Ozone Advanced, NUGEN Audio MasterCheck, and Youlean Loudness Meter to hit streaming loudness targets (-14 LUFS for Spotify and YouTube, -16 LUFS for Apple Music, with a -1.0 dBFS true-peak limit) and prepare deliverables like Dolby Atmos ADM BWF stems or DDP images.
Only ~35% of working hours involve creative balancing and coloration. The remaining ~65% is consumed by technical preparation and administration: de-noising and de-clicking with iZotope RX, vocal tuning via Celemony Melodyne, bouncing multiple passes, managing client revisions, and invoicing. Working hours are non-standard; commercial studio sessions frequently run 10 to 14 hours per day, often requiring overnight shifts or weekend work to meet strict release dates.
