What does the day look like?
Your workday involves conducting 4 to 7 hours of direct teaching, delivered as 1-on-1 instrumental lessons (30 to 60 minutes per student) or classroom group sessions of 20 to 30 students. You also spend 1 to 2 hours preparing lesson plans, annotating sheet music, setting homework, and working with notation software such as Sibelius, MuseScore 4, or Finale. Another 1 hour goes into administrative duties, including logging attendance in portals like Google Classroom, Canvas, or PowerSchool, writing evaluation reports, and scheduling parent conferences. Ahead of recitals or examinations, 1 to 2 hours are spent directing school choirs, orchestras, or student bands. Your equipment includes acoustic pianos, keyboards, guitars, metronomes, tuners, audio interfaces, and DAWs like GarageBand, Logic Pro, and Audacity.
In public and private schools, working hours run from 08:00 to 16:00. Private music studios and independent tutors work late afternoon and evening shifts from 14:00 to 20:30, as well as Saturdays from 09:00 to 15:00. There are no night shifts, apart from occasional evening school concerts. In reality, playing an instrument and performing accounts for only 20% of your time. About 45% of your day is spent on repetitive technical corrections of posture, scales, fingering, and rhythm, while 35% is consumed by classroom discipline, parent communication, and administrative paperwork.
