What does the day look like?
About 90% of your time is physical labour, facility maintenance, hospitality, and logistics, with only 10% spent observing engineering. You start by prepping control and tracking rooms: vacuuming carpets, wiping down consoles, and emptying trash. You manage hospitality by brewing coffee, preparing hot tea with honey and lemon for vocalists, stocking the fridge, and ordering meals via Deliveroo or Uber Eats. You also run errands across town to pick up microphones or outboard hardware from rental houses.
Inside the facility, you wrap XLR, TRS, speakON, and BNC cables using the over-under method, carry heavy guitar amplifiers, and move acoustic gobos under the assistant engineer's direction. You handle K&M stands, DI boxes, Bantam / TT patch cords, Microsoft Excel / Google Sheets, and occasionally Avid Pro Tools or Apple Logic Pro for inventory. Shifts run 12 hours (09:00 to 21:00 or 14:00 to 02:00), with frequent overnight sessions where cleaning finishes at 04:00 or 05:00. You are on your feet for 8 to 11 hours daily, and remote work does not exist.
