What does the day look like?
The job follows a standard office schedule of 37.5 to 40 hours per week. The visually exciting part that people imagine — designing coastal defence barriers and running colourful 3D flood simulations — takes up only about 15% of working hours. The remaining 85% consists of routine technical work: cleaning bathymetric point clouds, fixing mesh orthogonality, debugging model blow-ups, writing Python data-parsing scripts, and drafting regulatory engineering chapters.
Daily work involves configuring computational grids and executing simulations in numerical modeling packages such as Delft3D, MIKE 21 / MIKE 3, TELEMAC-MASCARET, SWAN, XBeach, and ADCIRC. Simulations run on Linux high-performance computing (HPC) clusters via SLURM schedulers and are post-processed using Python, MATLAB, and QGIS. Field visits for sensor placement account for under 5% of your time. There are no night shifts or regular on-call duties, outside of rare civil protection emergency flood-forecasting alerts.
