What does the day look like?
Your day is mostly office and meetings. You allocate an operating budget of USD 50,000,000 to USD 300,000,000, approve maintenance schedules for research vessels, AUVs and deep-submergence platforms. You track spending in SAP S/4HANA, Oracle Cloud ERP or Workday, plan cruises in systems such as the UNOLS Fleet Management Application, review IOOS dashboards, Copernicus Marine Service portals and cloud compute on AWS and Microsoft Azure. You negotiate core funding with the US National Science Foundation, the UK Natural Environment Research Council and the French Ministry of Higher Education and Research, manage donors, oversee compliance with IMO conventions, maritime labor rules, export controls for sensor technology and permits for sample collection, report to a board of trustees, and represent your country in IOC-UNESCO and POGO.
Active scientific analysis is 5% of the time: reviewing flagship papers or strategy documents. The other 95% is executive administration: political negotiation, legal compliance, staffing disputes, donor work and capital allocation. You work 50 to 65 hours per week, travel across continents for ministerial and ocean-treaty summits, and stay on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week during vessel groundings, equipment loss or medical evacuation at sea.
