What does the day look like?
Creative conceptualization and brainstorming make up only 15% to 20% of the daily routine. The largest portion of the day, between 40% and 50%, is spent drafting Game Design Documents (GDD), balancing numerical formulas and progression curves in Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets, implementing logic via Unreal Engine 5 Blueprints or Unity visual scripts, and tweaking engine parameters. Another 30% to 45% of the day goes to cross-functional meetings with programmers, artists, and UI/UX teams, as well as conducting internal playtests and bug triage.
The standard schedule runs 38 to 40 hours per week. Shift work and on-call rotations are rare for designers. However, extended evening and weekend hours (crunch) occur near milestone deadlines and commercial launches in traditional studios.
