What does the day look like?
You follow a care plan: washing, dressing and feeding patients, helping them move, observing symptoms and reporting deterioration. You may use slide sheets, hoists, slings, lifters, wheelchairs and movable beds. You also help with routine self-administered oral medicines, escort patients, support families and provide care to the body after death. You do not prescribe pain medicine independently.
Record updates, handovers, equipment cleaning, audits and volunteer support are also part of the job. You may work day, evening, night and weekend shifts; some overnight home-hospice visits last 8 or 9 hours. No reliable study gives a percentage for the more appealing parts of the work. Bodily care, repositioning, cleaning, observation, documentation and handover form a substantial part of the day.
