What does the day look like?
Your day is the work Charité, Helios, Asklepios and Caritas describe: giving medication and watching response, wound care and dressings, hygiene and infection control, personal care for immobile patients, vital-signs checks, writing everything in the electronic care documentation and hospital information system, handover to physicians and therapists, counselling patients and families. Tools: infusion pumps, wound-drainage systems, blood-pressure and ECG monitors, patient-lifting aids.
About 1/2 of a shift is direct bedside care, the other 1/2 is documentation, preparation, handover, ordering and coordination, more on understaffed wards. Work runs in early, late and night shifts with weekend, public-holiday and on-call rosters; outpatient services work split day tours. Night duty carries statutory surcharges. Lifting, standing, plus responsibility for controlled drugs and delegated tasks, is the load teenagers miss.
