What does the day look like?
A patent traineeship has 0% lab work. Your day is 100% desk work: reading claims, technical documents and legal rules. Roughly 40% of the day is prior-art searching and novelty assessment in Espacenet, Google Patents, Lens.org, STNext, Orbit Intelligence, Derwent Innovation and PatBase. About 35% is answering examination reports: comparing examiner citations from offices such as the EPO or UK IPO against the client's claims and drafting technical counter-arguments and claim amendments under supervision. About 15% is helping draft patents: interviewing inventors, reviewing disclosure forms, blueprints and circuit diagrams, and drafting descriptions and independent and dependent claims. About 10% is formalities and study: priority dates, PCT national-phase deadlines and exam preparation, using Anaqua, CPA Global / Clarivate FoundationIP, AppColl, Equinox, Word claim-tree plug-ins, EPO MyEPO Portfolio, the WIPO ePCT portal, and national portals such as UK IPO and DPMA DPMAdirektPro.
Hours are 09:00 to 17:30, Monday to Friday, 37.5 to 40 hours per week. No shifts, no on-call, no nights. There are crunch periods before hard statutory deadlines that cannot be extended, such as 2-month or 4-month examination response limits and the 12-month Paris Convention priority cutoff.
