What does the day look like?
Your core work is teaching around the heart-lung machine. You run high-fidelity perfusion simulation scenarios, debrief students on pump flows, pressures, gas exchange, anticoagulation and emergency drills, supervise them on clinical rotations and sign off competencies.
You write and mark exams aligned to the 11-section ABCP knowledge base, maintain skills-lab equipment — heart-lung machine with roller or centrifugal pumps, oxygenators, heat exchangers, cardioplegia delivery systems, cell-saver autotransfusion systems, intra-aortic balloon pumps and point-of-care coagulation and blood-gas analysers — and document accreditation outcomes. The work also covers ECMO, ventricular assist devices, autotransfusion, blood therapy and pediatric and adult perfusion. Operating the pump yourself is the smaller share of the week; preparation, assessment, documentation and maintenance are the larger share. University posts are mainly daytime teaching plus marking, hospital-academy posts combine classroom weeks with night and weekend on-call for transplant or ECMO cases.
