What does the day look like?
Specialists in this field do not sit in a consultation room conducting 50-minute individual therapy sessions. Between 80% and 90% of working hours are devoted to health system architecture, programme oversight, and diplomacy. Daily tasks include drafting national mental health strategy guidelines and standard operating procedures (SOPs), coordinating IASC MHPSS working groups across UN agencies (WHO, UNICEF, UNHCR, IOM) and NGOs, and designing cascade-training models using WHO mhGAP and PM+ for community workers. You also monitor multi-million-dollar emergency grants, draft donor reports for USAID or EU ECHO, and conduct rapid epidemiological assessments in conflict or disaster zones using KoboToolbox, ODK, DHIS2, Epi Info, SPSS, R, Stata, and enterprise systems like Oracle Cloud or SAP.
Headquarters postings in Geneva, New York, Copenhagen, or Cairo follow a standard 40-hour work week. Humanitarian field deployments, however, expand to 60 to 70 hours per week with mandatory 24/7 on-call duty, security curfews, and remote compound living.
