What does the day look like?
Your day is primarily office-based, working a standard 40-hour week (Monday to Friday, 08:30 to 17:30). About 40% of your time is spent reading 2D and 3D technical blueprints and conducting digital quantity takeoffs in software like Bluebeam Revu, PlanSwift, or Cubicost to measure concrete volume, rebar weight, and wall areas. Another 30% goes to comparing subcontractor and supplier quotes, building rate calculations in Microsoft Excel, and updating cost databases such as RSMeans, BCIS, Sana-2015, or Grand-Smeta.
The remaining time is split between issuing technical clarification requests (RFIs) to architects and negotiating with subcontractors (15%), and visiting construction sites to verify physical progress against submitted invoices such as Forma-2 (15%). Night shifts and on-call duties are rare, though overtime is frequent during the 48 to 72 hours before major tender deadlines.
