What does the day look like?
You check the referral list, confirm clinical indication, pregnancy status and contrast contraindications, then verify identity with a 3-point check: name, date of birth, address. You lift and position patients on tables or against detector plates, including immobile and trauma cases, select dose under ALARA, and run X-ray, CT, MRI and fluoroscopy C-arms. You check images for motion artifacts, contrast timing, coverage and markers, then push DICOM sets to PACS and log exams in RIS. The mix is 40% direct patient handling, 30% console work setting kVp, mAs and scan fields with automated contrast injection, 20% admin and IT in PACS/RIS, 10% disinfecting rooms, stocking contrast and cannulas, and handing red-flag findings to duty radiologists. Vendors include Siemens Healthineers (Somatom, Magnetom), GE HealthCare (Revolution CT, Optima), Philips (Incisive CT, Ingenia MRI), Canon Medical Systems, with Sectra PACS, GE Centricity RIS/PACS, Philips Vue PACS, Epic Rover/Radiant, Cerner RadNet, plus lead aprons, thyroid shields, gonad shielding and OSL dosimeters.
Hospital imaging runs 24/7/365. Standard week is 37.5 hours in the UK NHS and 40 hours in the US and Germany, on 12-hour day/night rotations with weekend cover and on-call for trauma and stroke thrombectomy.
