What does the day look like?
The contract week is 37.5 hours in the NHS in the UK and 40 hours in United States and Australia hospitals, usually as 4 days of 10 hours or 5 days of 7.5 hours. As lead you also cover on-call for the hyperacute stroke pathway (thrombectomy/MR perfusion) and weekend emergency neuro/spine rota.
Around 30% to 40% of the day is hands-on scanning: cardiac MRI, multi-parametric prostate, functional MRI, high-risk neuro-oncology, and pediatric sedation scans. Around 35% is operations: rota planning, waitlist KPI monitoring, booking optimisation, dealing with vendor service engineers, and contrast-agent supply. Around 15% is safety and governance as MRSO: vetting pacemakers, aneurysm clips and neuromodulators against safety databases, incident audits, QA phantom scans. Around 10% is protocol work with radiologists, teaching juniors, and trial administration. Hardware is 1.5T and 3.0T systems such as Siemens Healthineers MAGNETOM Vida, Sola, GE HealthCare SIGNA Pioneer, Premier, and Philips Ingenia, Ambition, with Siemens Syngo.via, GE AW Workstation, Philips IntelliSpace Portal, Sectra, Epic Radiant, Cerner RadNet, PACS, mrisafety.com and Metrasens Ferroguard.
