What does the day look like?
The day begins by calling patients from waiting areas, verifying their identity using 2 to 3 identifiers (full name, date of birth, hospital number), and guiding them into changing cubicles. Patients must remove jewellery, underwire bras, dentures, and hearing aids prior to X-ray or MRI scans. The role involves administering MRI safety screening forms, transferring non-ambulatory patients from wheelchairs or stretchers onto examination tables using slide boards and hoists, restocking IV cannulas and contrast syringes, and disinfecting equipment surfaces between patients. Every step is logged in the departmental RIS and PACS software.
Between 50% and 60% of the shift is physically demanding patient transfer, changing, and positioning assistance. Sanitizing scanner surfaces and replenishing supplies accounts for 20%, while clerical logging and phone coordination take 15% to 20%. Standing near active high-tech scanners or viewing monitors makes up only 5% to 10% of the day. The position entails 37.5 to 40 hours per week across 24-hour rotas, including early shifts (07:30 to 15:30), late shifts (12:30 to 20:30), 12-hour coverage (08:00 to 20:00), weekends, and emergency nights.
