What does the day look like?
Your shift centres on physical hardware diagnostics: using multimeters, oscilloscopes, and clamp meters to test 24V DC sensor signals, 400V AC 3-phase motor drives, and PROFINET, EtherCAT, or IO-Link communication cables. You plug a ruggedised laptop via RJ45 into Siemens SIMATIC S7-1200/S7-1500 (via TIA Portal) or Rockwell ControlLogix (via Studio 5000) PLCs to monitor rungs and force tags. You also service Festo or SMC pneumatic manifolds, replace timing belts and gearboxes, and read electrical schematics in EPLAN Pro Panel or AutoCAD Electrical.
Only 15% of the day matches the common imagination of programming robot arm paths or 3D modeling. The remaining 85% is hands-on maintenance: clearing conveyor jams, tracing broken cables inside drag chains, wiping coolant and grease, swapping 24V power supplies, and logging maintenance tickets into CMMS software like SAP PM or Maximo. The role involves 3-shift rotations (morning, afternoon, night across 8-hour or 12-hour cycles) and on-call duties (Rufbereitschaft). Steel-toe boots, high-visibility clothing, and hearing protection are mandatory.
