What does the day look like?
A normal week is 37.5 to 40 hours, usually Monday to Friday, 09:00 to 17:30. You may work evenings or weekends for exhibition openings, auction previews, and public programmes. Shift work is rare, but mid-level staff can have courier duty, travelling with loaned artworks on cargo flights or trains. Night work mainly appears around exhibition installation deadlines, private viewings, and fundraising galas.
Only 5% to 10% is the glamorous version: looking at paintings, walking through galleries, choosing works for exhibitions, and discussing aesthetics. The other 90% to 95% is administration, documentation, and logistics: entering accession numbers, dimensions, medium, and donor metadata into TMS, Axiell EMu, Vernon CMS, or Museumplus; researching provenance through Artnet Price Database, Artprice, Invaluable, JSTOR, Artstor, and Zotero; writing 50 to 75 word wall labels; using Adobe InDesign for brochures; drafting condition reports; and checking crates, shippers, and temperature/relative humidity loggers.
